Our Story

We are the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm, a distinct and independent Nation who have lived in harmony with our territory surrounding the Coquitlam River Watershed since before remembered time.  We share family, social, and cultural ties with all of our stál̕əw̓ (Fraser River) neighbours.  Our name in our traditional hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ language means “Red Fish up the River” from a unique run of sockeye salmon that once thrived in the waters of our territory. Our name reflects the strong connection that our Nation and People have to the lands and waters of our home.

Our Plans

The kʷikʷəƛ̓əm First Nation has an ongoing commitment to the Comprehensive Community Planning (CPP) process to shape decision-making and program development for the Nation. Community planning involves understanding where we have come from, where we are now and where we want to be in the future. In 2021, we updated our Comprehensive Community Plan to reflect the many changes our nation has undergone. Our 2021 CPP Plan reflects our goals, values and priorities. It is a plan by the community, for the community.

Our Government

The kʷikʷəƛ̓əm First Nation is governed by an elected Chief and Council (yəw̓en̓ si:ʔem̓) who serve a four year term of office.  Our government is committed to working together as one to one to build capacity, and operate as a transparent, accountable, effective, sustainable government  for the benefit of current and future generations, in accordance with our shared values.   yəw̓en̓ si:ʔem̓ is supported by a Heads of Family Advisory Committee and Standing Committees who provide advice and input into the Nation’s governance and activities.
